The city fades. The wildlife begins.

The gates open, birds call from the trees, and within minutes the rhythm of central Berlin gives way to shaded paths, dramatic habitats and close encounters with animals from around the world.

This feature follows the visit as it happened: through the historic entrance, past the Rhino Pagoda and elephant habitat, into the lion landscape and Panda Garden, then onward to the Aquarium’s coral reefs and reptile world. Every photograph and the opening film were captured during our own visit.

Chapter one

Through the historic gates

The ornamental entrance is more than a practical starting point. It acts like the opening frame of the story, leading from the city into a landscape of old trees and animal habitats.

Welcome to Berlin Zoo

A symmetrical stone-and-metal gateway creates a memorable first impression and gives the article its natural opening scene.

Architecture meets wildlife

The rust-red Rhino Pagoda gives this part of the zoo a distinctive visual identity. Beyond the architecture, the calm presence of the rhinoceros makes the section feel grounded and monumental.

A strong travel image does more than show an animal—it reveals the relationship between the animal, its habitat and the city around it.

Elephants beneath Berlin’s skyline

One of the most distinctive views of the visit places the elephant habitat against modern city buildings. The contrast makes Berlin Zoo feel unmistakably urban while preserving a quiet, spacious atmosphere inside the enclosure.

Kings of the Zoo

Framed by trees, rocks and dense planting, the lions appear at the centre of a surprisingly cinematic landscape.

Panda Garden

A red gateway into a quieter world

The Panda Garden’s architectural entrance is immediately recognizable. Inside, bamboo, timber structures and soft green light create one of the most distinctive atmospheres in the zoo.

Wildlife gallery

From mountain rock to birds of prey

A mix of wide habitats and close portraits keeps the visual rhythm varied: a distant animal in its landscape, followed by a detailed encounter at eye level.

Chapter two

Into the blue

The atmosphere changes completely at the Aquarium. Daylight gives way to deep blue illumination, moving water and luminous marine life.

Texture, scale and ancient forms

The reptile rooms bring a different photographic language: close shell patterns, heavy armored skin and low, warm light.

Plan the visit

A practical rhythm for the day

The most enjoyable approach is to treat the Zoo and Aquarium as one long visual journey rather than rushing from one famous animal to the next.

Start with the outdoor habitats

Begin at the historic entrance and explore the larger habitats while your energy is highest. The Rhino Pagoda, elephants, lions and Panda Garden form a strong first half of the visit.

Save time for the Aquarium

The Aquarium changes the pace of the day. Its darker interiors, marine displays and reptile rooms deserve a dedicated block of time rather than a quick final stop.

Photograph in sequences

Capture each area with one establishing image, one close animal portrait and one small detail. This creates a much stronger visual story than isolated snapshots.
