A modern Berlin landmark built for looking up

The former Sony Center is not a single attraction behind a ticket gate. It is an open urban forum where dramatic engineering, restaurants, offices and everyday Berlin life meet beneath a vast cable-supported roof.

Every photograph in this guide was captured during our own visit. No stock photography was used.

First impression

Entering the heart of Potsdamer Platz

Walk in from Potsdamer Platz and the surrounding towers begin to frame the sky. Glass, steel and reflections overlap from every direction, creating a distinctly post-reunification view of Berlin.

The complex opened in 2000 and was designed by architect Helmut Jahn. It was long known worldwide as the Sony Center; its official name today is Das Center am Potsdamer Platz.

The forum

A public square beneath a roof

The central forum works like a sheltered city plaza rather than an enclosed shopping mall. Visitors can cross it at any time, pause on the curved benches, watch the fountains or use it as a starting point for exploring Potsdamer Platz.

Allow roughly 30 to 60 minutes for the architecture alone. Add more time for food, photography or nearby attractions.

The iconic canopy

Berlin's most photogenic ceiling

Stand close to the center and point the camera straight upward. The repeating membrane panels and cable rings form a radial composition that changes with the light.

Architecture

Lightweight structure, monumental effect

The canopy is made from translucent membrane panels held by a steel-and-cable structure. During the day it filters daylight into the forum; after dark, illumination changes the character of the space.

The best architectural photographs come from moving around the plaza rather than staying in one place. Try a centered symmetrical view, then step toward the edges to include glass façades and towers.

The plaza is also a social space

The architecture draws people in, but the restaurants, food hall, terraces and seating keep the forum active throughout the day.

Photography guide

Five shots worth bringing home

01

Straight upward

Stand near the middle of the forum and align the central mast vertically. A wide lens gives the strongest radial pattern.

02

Sun through the canopy

Move until the sun sits beside the central ring. Protect highlights and expose for the white membrane panels.

03

Architecture plus people

Include seated visitors or walkers to show the scale of the forum and make the scene feel lived-in.

04

Frame the towers

Use the roof edge as a natural frame for the glass towers around Potsdamer Platz.

05

Return at blue hour

The daytime structure is impressive, but illumination and glass reflections create a different atmosphere after sunset.

+

Local timing tip

Earlier visits are calmer. Late afternoon gives more human activity; evening is best for lighting and reflections.
